Scoutmaster Conference

When a scout is finished with the requirements for his next rank, a Scoutmaster conference is required. Along with a Board of Review, these are Scouting's method of checks and balances. This is a valuable opportunity for a Scoutmaster to discuss with each Scout his activity in the troop and his understanding and practice of the ideals of Scouting. This is a time for the Scoutmaster to:

  • Openly talk about the Scout’s progress in the troop.
  • Ask how the Scout has demonstrated leadership in the troop and his patrol.
  • Ask what he’s done in his position of leadership.
  • Ask how he defines Scout spirit and lives according to the Scout Oath and Law.
  • See how much fun he’s having.
  • Determine whether he’s having any problems.
  • Ask for suggestions to make the troop better.
  • Ask about non-Scouting areas of the boy’s life (school, sports, extracurricular activities, etc.)

It is the scout’s responsibility to request a conference with Scoutmaster Brooks. It should be done at least one week prior to a scheduled Board Of Review (normally the 4th Tuesday of the month). The Scoutmaster will go through check that the scout's handbook is signed off properly and will review with the scout many of the requirements.  If the Scoutmaster feels that the scout is ready for advancement, he will sign the scout's handbook. If the Scoutmaster feels that there are any deficiencies, they will be clearly outlined with what needs to be done to correct them, and a follow-up conference date will be set.  The scout should present himself for his conference in his Class A uniform with his scout book.

After a successful Scoutmaster conference, the next step is for the Scout to ask the Advancement Chair (Mrs. Bedinger) to schedule a Board of Review.  Its purpose is to determine the quality of the scout's experience and decide whether he has fulfilled the requirements for the rank.  This is not a test, but rather a review of what the scout has learned, a celebration of his achievement, and encouragement to continue to strive.  The Board will spend 15-20 minutes with the scout discussing the things he did to earn this advancement, as well as his general feelings about the Troop, the program, his goals, etc.   The Board is made up of committee members, members of our charter organization, and parents (other than the scout's parents).  Scouts must request to schedule a Board of Review at least one week prior to the monthly BOR; the deadline is midnight the Tuesday before.  The scout must contact Mrs. Bedinger personally, either in person, or via phone or email (both of which can be found on the adults contact page).  Boards are held at 7pm at Haymarket Baptist Church, the fourth Tuesday of the month.  Scouts should arrive in their Class A uniform (please be neat; no sweats or gym shorts) with their handbook.
